The Embarq Free-Fall Paper Contest will be held on Saturday, April 26, at the times shown below.  Students can sign up for the contest by using the same pre-registration form used for entering exhibits in the fair (either hardcopy or the online form on this website).

Object of the Contest:   Create a paper floater that will float the longest period of time when dropped from a designated point at the top of the ramp in the Chambersburg Area Middle School.

Contest Rules

  • STUDENTS MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS CONTEST.

  • Each student will be given an 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper.  Students may use paper clips, tape, scissors and staples if they so desire.  The science council will provide all of these supplies.  No additional paper or supplies may be used.

  • Any type of design will be accepted as long as only the above-mentioned materials are used.

  • The student must independently create the floater.  Parents may give verbal guidance only.  All floaters must be created at the time of the contest.

  • Students may practice at home to create a winning design, but they must create a new floater at the time of the contest.  This floater must be used for each round of the contest.

  • The student or chosen substitute will say .Release. at the time he or she releases the floater. The timing official will begin the stopwatch immediately. The officiating timer will be at the ground level. He or she will stop the stopwatch when any part of the paper touches the ground floor

  • Any unforeseen obstacles that interfere with the path of the floater will constitute a voided flight and the student will start again.

  • Each student will be given three opportunities to drop his or her floater from the top of the ramp. All three times will be recorded, and the longest time will be counted.

  • Students may re-adjust their floaters after each flight.

  • In the event of a tie score, an additional tie-breaking round will be held.
